SLT
The latest laser technology for glaucoma treatment is called SLT, or Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty. A laser is a device which can create a concentrated beam of exquisitely aligned light rays of a given frequency. These light rays can be precisely aimed within thousandths of an inch to target tissues in the eye. SLT works by applying small amounts of laser light to the fluid drainage canals of the eye. The laser pulses open the drainage pores in the eye, thereby lowering eye pressure and protecting the optic nerve. The patient receives an eye drop anesthetic, sits at the laser which is attached to a standard examination microscope, and the treatment is performed. Most patients find the procedure to be comfortable and painless. They typically resume their normal activities, including driving, immediately following the procedure.
